I have no illusions that these words are going away but if I never hear them in the coming year that would be fine too.
10. Transparency – I doubt we’re going to get as much of it as we’ve been promised anyway.
9. Green – As in green jobs, green industry, green friendly, etc. I’m not against the idea of green-ness, just sick of hearing about it and the moral superiority that usually accompanies such talk.
8. Global Warming - There are rumblings on the internets that 2008 is the year this term died. We can only hope.
7. President Elect - The best thing about Obama’s inauguration is that once he’s sworn in as president he won’t have to create stupid blue signs to let the world know who he is anymore.
6. Maverick – No offense to McCain or Palin but this word needs to be retired. Unless it’s used in the context of an old cowboy movie.
5. Distraction – You know, an inconvenient fact or news story that disrupts the Obama is God narrative. The press has started using this term in the same way Obama does so I’m sure we will be hearing about more “distractions” in the future.
4. Main Street/Wall Street – Since there are no more presidential debates for another four years we probably won’t have to hear this stupid term anymore. Four years from now, they will have figured out some new way to say the same thing.
3. Bailout – Translation: Robbing the taxpayers. We need less of this but I fear we’ll get more. Much more.
2. Hope – The 2008 presidential campaign has completely ruined this word for me. I can’t even say I “hope” I don’t hear the word again. Although I guess I just did.
1. Change – The most vacuous campaign word in history. Devoid of any detail except the possible underlying meaning of – different than Bush. Although as we’ve seen so far, maybe not so different.
So there you go, that’s my list. As I said, I doubt these words are going away but I can not use them. Could we also ignore them? Yes we can.
