Some On Left Finally Figuring Out They Were Bamboozled
“They will try to bamboozle you, and hoodwink you, run the okey-doke on you.”
-Candidate Barack Obama, February 2008
By “they” Obama really meant “he” and some of his supporters on the left are finally figuring that out. Politico reports that there’s a “growing chorus” on the left that’s none too pleased with Barry when it comes to his most recent 180. Specifically his DOJ’s stance on warrantless wiretapping. Full story HERE.
“The new wave of criticism was triggered by two actions in recent weeks by the Justice Department. First, earlier this month, the department presented an expansive series of arguments urging a federal court in San Francisco to throw out a lawsuit over warrantless surveillance first filed against Bush. The department’s brief not only asserted the state secrets privilege, which has long infuriated civil libertarians, but also made a sweeping assertion that Americans have no rights to challenge surveillance that violates the law unless the information is improperly released.”
The Electronic Frontier Foundation even went so far as to publish a piece titled “In Warrantless Wiretapping Case, Obama DOJ’s Arguments Are Worse Than Bush’s”
“We had hoped this would go differently.”
“The DOJ claims that the U.S. Government is completely immune from litigation for illegal spying — that the Government can never be sued for surveillance that violates federal privacy statutes.”
“This is a radical assertion that is utterly unprecedented. No one — not the White House, not the Justice Department, not any member of Congress, and not the Bush Administration — has ever interpreted the law this way.”
With this kind of buyer’s remorse coming before the completion of Obama’s first 100 days, it’s hard to imagine that he will get the support needed for a second term four years from now.
What’s surprising to many conservatives and libertarians is that any of these people believed Obama in the first place. We’ll try not to do any finger wagging though. We’re going to need their support in the future to get the United States government back on the side of the people.
