U2 Performs at Site of Berlin Wall to Celebrate Fall of Berlin Wall and Keeps Out Gate Crashers by Building a New Berlin Wall

I like U2 but this story definitely comes from the department of DUH.

I like U2 but this story definitely comes from the department of DUH.

“Bono got Berliners’ backs up yesterday – by building his own wall in the centre of their city.”

“A free open-air concert by the singer and his U2 bandmates at the Brandenburg Gate hit a bum note when concert planners erected a two-metre wall around it to keep out ticketless fans.”

“Ironically, the concert was held to marked the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall, which sparked the reunification of Germany.”

“There were 10,000 tickets for the gig, part of the MTV Europe awards, given away free online.”

“Frank Henkel, of the Berlin city-state parliament, said: “It’s a shame that a barrier has been set up. It’s stopping many Berliners from hearing the concert. “It would have been so much better if as many Berliners as possible could have taken part.”

“Ernst Kant, who lives in the German capital, said: “The people of this city still have difficulty with the deaths of many who tried to escape the east. This will bring it all back for those who lost loved ones.”

“Louis-Pierre Boily, a Canadian fan who travelled to Berlin despite failing to get a ticket for the gig, said: “It’s ridiculous to block the view. MTV probably want people to watch it on TV.”

Somewhere in there is an allegory for American liberalism but I’m far too sober to figure it out.
