Stephen Barr, who authored The Federal Diary column for several years, this week joins the Labor Department as a top public affairs official.
Barr will serve as senior managing director of the Office of Public Affairs, making him the most senior career official in the office, according to Labor Department spokesman Carl Fillichio.
The move makes Barr a member of the Senior Executive Service, a corp of senior federal employees that Barr covered from 2000 to 2008 as author of the Diary, a column widely-read by federal employees nationwide that remains one of the longest-running features of the Post.

As The Post’s Chris Cillizza first reported, Veteran Washington Post congressional correspondent Shailagh Murray is joining the Obama administration as Vice President Biden’s new communications director, joining a long line of journalists who have left the rough and tumble news industry to toil in the public sector…
Murray is now one of more than a dozen people formerly employed by national news outlets working for the administration. Here are the others:
• Roberta Baskin: The former CBS News and WJLA-TV reporter is now a senior communications adviser to the Department of Health and Human Services health-care fraud task force.
• Warren Bass: The former Washington Post Outlook editor serves as a top official at the State Department.
• Jay Carney: The former TIME Magazine Washington and Moscow bureau chief preceded Murray as Biden’s communications director and now serves as White House press secretary.
• Linda Douglass: The former Congressional correspondent for CBS and ABC and writer/editor at National Journal left journalism to join Obama’s 2008 campaign. She then led the administration’s communications efforts during the health-care reform debate and has since returned to the Journal’s parent company, Atlantic Media.
• Peter Gosselin: The former Los Angeles Times reporter now writes speeches for Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner.
• David Hoff: The Education Week reporter and blogger serves on the staff at the Education Department.
• Sasha Johnson: The former CNN political producer is now lead spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration.
• Beverley Lumpkin: A former Justice Department reporter/producer for ABC and CBS, she left journalism, worked for the Project on Government Oversight and joined DOJ last month as press secretary, turning sources into colleagues.
• Geoff Morrell: A holdover from the Bush administration, the former ABC newsman became spokesman for Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates in 2007.
• Desson Thomson: The former Washington Post movie critic served as a top aide and speechwriter for Louis Susman, the U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom. He is now in a similar role with Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.
• Rick Weiss: The former Washington Post science reporter left for the Center for American Progress and now serves as communications director and senior policy strategist for the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
• Jill Zuckman: The former Washington correspondent for the Chicago Tribune works with Ray LaHood as communications director at the Department of Transportation.
Funny, I don’t remember hearing about any of that from Media Matters.
How are the American people supposed to trust the media to be objective when everyone who works in the media wants to work for the executive branch of government?
