Bizarro America: Obama White House Now Vetting Journalism
Journalists usually vet the president but this is Obama’s America and the media is all too happy to sacrifice its integrity for the sake of the Obama campaign.
The Weekly Standard reports…
Vanity Fair writer Michael Lewis agreed to allow the White House to approve the quotations he used from President Barack Obama in his story about the president in this month’s magazine.
“Like other journalists who write about Washington and presidential politics, Mr. Lewis said that he had to submit to the widespread but rarely disclosed practice of quote approval,” reports the New York Times.
During a discussion at Lincoln Center on Monday night with Graydon Carter, the editor of Vanity Fair, Mr. Lewis volunteered to the audience that as a condition of cooperating with his story, the White House insisted on signing off on the quotes that would appear.
Mr. Lewis said that ultimately the White House disallowed very little of what he asked to use. And he described having access to the president that was unusually unfettered. About 95 percent of what he witnessed was on the record, he said.
Does anyone doubt the article Michael Lewis published would have become an exposé about the lack of transparency at the White House if the president was a Republican? Please.
As White House reporter for ABC News Jake Tapper recently commented, “The media is failing the country.”
A July 16 Rasmussen poll revealed “59% of likely U.S. voters believe Obama has received the best treatment from the media so far” and “51% expect most reporters to help Obama.” Only 9% expect the media to help Romney.
The media should, at bare minimum, be expected to reveal the truth. But it won’t even do that.
Still the media focus nonstop on unsubstantiated reports about Mitt Romney’s tax returns — not on anything substantial.
MSNBC analyst Mark Halperin, when asked about Mitt Romney’s tax returns on the Today Show, said, “The press still likes this story a lot.”
He added, “The media are very susceptible to doing what the Obama campaign wants, which is to focus on this.”
