Gee, I Wonder Why Democrats Aren’t Campaigning on Their “Accomplishments”

Democrats shoved Stimulus, ObamaCare, auto bailouts and more down the throats of an unwilling electorate, then told the American people we’re just too stupid to appreciate it.  Now, as the president’s Democratic Party begins preparing for a political bloodbath in November, they suddenly don’t want to talk about any of the wonderful things they’ve done for us. Why could that be?

Reporting from Washington — As Democrats fan out across the country to campaign for reelection this month, many are surprisingly quiet about their hard-won accomplishments — the major bills they have passed under President Obama.

In an effort coordinated with the White House, congressional leaders are urging Democrats to focus less on bragging about what they have done — a landmark healthcare law, a sweeping overhaul of Wall Street regulation and other far-reaching policy changes — and more on efforts to fix the economy and on the perils of Republican control of Congress.

One year after many town hall meetings were upended by raucous anti-government protesters, congressional Democrats are trying to ensure that this summer’s debate sheds a more flattering light on their party as they navigate a bruising midterm election campaign.

I thought we were supposed to be grateful. Remember what Obama said last April? “You would think they’d be saying thank you.”

Ayn Rand, Libertarians and Glenn Beck

Libertarians and conservatives are old political friends. Although there have been a few bumps in the road over the years, we should all give credit to President Obama for making us more solid than ever. Maybe that's what Obama meant when he said he was a "uniter."

With the introduction of Cap & Trade, ObamaCare and corporate bailouts, you can practically taste the surge of of interest in libertarian ideology in the air. It’s no accident that Tea Parties are springing up everywhere, Ayn Rand is more popular than ever and Glenn Beck’s ratings continue to rise.

This hasn’t gone unnoticed by the Wall Street Journal where Steven Kurutz recently interviewed Ayn Rand biographer Anne C. Heller.

“When Anne C. Heller set out five years ago to write a biography of Ayn Rand, she was intrigued by the fact that though Rand’s novels like “The Fountainhead” continued to sell well, the libertarian writer was barely spoken about. One near-Depression later, however, Rand’s anti-socialist beliefs championing individualism over collectivism are suddenly striking a chord with critics of the government’s recent nationalization of banking and other industries.”

“The Wall Street Journal: Ayn Rand has been invoked at town hall meetings across the country. Why are Rand’s fiercely libertarian ideas — and novels — back in the news?”

“Her sales and reputation bubble along under the radar quite consistently. But certain opinion makers like Glenn Beck rediscovered her because there’s a strange parallelism between her visions in “Atlas Shrugged” and the Obama administration — namely, government taking over private industries. In periods of economic downtown “Atlas Shrugged” strikes a chord in people who are afraid of economic collapse.”

This liberty driven zeitgeist hasn’t escaped Reason Magazine either. A well known Libertarian outlet, Reason is producing a video series on the suddenly increased relevance of Ayn Rand’s work.

Ed Morrissey of Hot Air wrote a great post on this subject today where he tied it all together in this brilliant quote:

“Who would have guessed that the era of Hope and Change would have produced Rand as a counter-cultural phenomenon?”

“Well, perhaps Rand herself would have foreseen it — and in fact she did, in Atlas Shrugged.”

Libertarians and conservatives are old political friends. Although there have been a few bumps in the road over the years, we should all give credit to President Obama for making us more solid than ever.

Maybe that’s what Obama meant when he said he was a “uniter.”

Philadelphia’s Free Libraries to CLOSE October 2nd

Need further proof that America's priorities are out of whack? Consider this: ACORN still receives tax payer funding but the City of Philadelphia is closing all of its free libraries on October 2, 2009.

All Free Library of Philadelphia Branch, Regional and Central Libraries Closed Effective Close of Business October 2, 2009

All Free Library of Philadelphia Customers,

We deeply regret to inform you that without the necessary budgetary legislation by the State Legislature in Harrisburg, the City of Philadelphia will not have the funds to operate our neighborhood branch libraries, regional libraries, or the Parkway Central Library after October 2, 2009.

Specifically, the following will take effect after the close of business, October 2, 2009:

  • All branch and regional library programs, including programs for children and teens, after school programs, computer classes, and programs for adults, will be cancelled
  • All Parkway Central Library programs, including children programs, programs to support small businesses and job seekers, computer classes and after school programs, will be cancelled. We are exploring the possibility of relocating the Philadelphia Author Series programs to other non-library facilities.
  • All library visits to schools, day care centers, senior centers and other community centers will cease.
  • All community meetings at our branch and regional libraries, and the Parkway Central Library, will be cancelled.
  • All GED, ABE and ESL programs held at Free Library branches will be discontinued, students should contact their teacher to see if other arrangements are being made.

Where’s that TRILLION DOLLARS in “Stimulus” money the American people were forced to cough up a few months ago? Who would you rather bail out, Philadelphia libraries or AIG?

How do you think Ben Franklin would answer that question?

Hat tip to Free Republic.

Obama’s GM Car Czar Has No Experience in the Car Business or the Private Sector

31 Year old Brian Deese is now in charge of General Motors. He has never worked in the car business. He has never worked in any private business.

What makes President Obama think he is qualified to reshape General Motors?

“Washington: It is not every 31-year-old who, in a first government job, finds himself dismantling General Motors Corp. and rewriting the rules of American capitalism.”

“But that, in short, is the job description for Brian Deese, a not-quite-graduate of Yale Law School who never stepped foot in an automotive assembly plant until he took on his nearly unseen role in remaking the US automotive industry.”
I’m skeptical because I’ve worked in the car business.
Glenn Beck is much more cynical. Oh and by the way, he’s right.
