Bribery Evident in Health Care Votes

“I am so angry it is hard to express my thinking in a rational manner. In order to pass a bill that 60 percent of the American people do not want, our Senate leadership resorted to pure bribery. I should point out that in political terms, 60 percent is a landslide. First we are paying Mary Landrieu, D-La., $300 million for a second Louisiana Purchase to change her vote. That’s bribery. Now we are paying Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb., who knows how much for his vote. The bill requires all states to extend Medicaid coverage to everyone below 133 percent of the poverty level. That’s an unfunded mandate. After 2016 Nebraska is exempt from paying any additional costs. That’s bribery.”

Rep. Parker Griffith of Alabama shocked the nation today by switching his party affiliation from the Dems to the GOP.

Good for him! Republican leaders are thrilled.

“Republicans who desperately wanted to beat Alabama Democratic Rep. Parker Griffith next year are loving him today.”

“House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) touted Griffith as a “dedicated public servant who has consistently put the best interests of his constituents first.” Pete Sessions, chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, said Griffith is putting the “interests of his constituents ahead of Nancy Pelosi’s reckless ideological agenda.” Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) says Griffith is ready to “stand and fight” with his new party.”

“Even the top Senate Republican felt compelled to tout Griffith as a sign of things to come, saying the defection represents “growing evidence of the unacceptability of this national Democratic agenda in much of red state America.” But Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, who told reporters Tuesday he grew up in Griffith’s district, said the divide is wider than just traditionally Republican enclaves.”

“As you’ve seen the public opinion polls on health care bill, it’s not just red-state America where the health care bill is unpopular; it’s in blue-state America as well,” McConnell said.”

David Gregory: …What does the president need to address to keep his own party in line? Should there be personnel changes in the White House? What do you think the left is going to demand?

KOS: Well, 2006 is going to be a base year. It’s going to be a base election.

David Gregory: 2010, you mean.

KOS: I mean 2010.

David Gregory: Yeah.

KOS: And according to my own polling, we use an independent pollster, 86 percent of Republicans plan on turning out or are likely to turn out. Only 56 percent of Democrats are – similarly believe they’re going to turn out or likely to turn out. Only 32 percent of African-Americans, only 41 percent of 18 to 29-year-olds. We have numbers like that, we’re going to get killed in 2010. So the Democrats have to start paying attention to the base, have to start probably picking some fights. I mean, maybe regulatory reform could be a way to do that.

The government of the United States is working against the will of the people.

NO ONE wants this disastrous health care legislation. The left hates it. The right hates it. Many in the middle hate it. The latest CNN poll shows that over 60% of the American people oppose it. Yet Reid, Pelosi and Obama are moving forward with it. Against the will of the American people.

They used extortion to get it. They used bribery to get it. They used secrecy to get it.

The lack of transparency involved in this nightmare legislation flies in the face of everything Obama campaigned on.

The legislation was never online.

The arguments were never televised on CSPAN.

The bill was hidden from the public.

Yet Reid, Pelosi and Obama are moving forward with it. Against the will of the people.

They are supposed to work for the people. They were put into office by the people. They are supposed to represent the interests of the people. But they think they know better than the people and they don’t care what we think.

Christmas 2009 will be remembered as a sad time for America.

A time when the United States Government looked to the American people and said “Merry Christmas and fuck you. We don’t care what you think.”

Bush took office.”

“The Senate faces a Dec. 31 deadline to address the issue, but it’s not clear when that chamber will find the time to do so in the midst of its marathon health-care debate. It’s also unclear whether the House’s approach on the estate tax could garner the 60 votes necessary to move forward in the Senate.”

“Some Democrats in both chambers would prefer to see higher estate tax rates, arguing that the pre-2001 levels were fair and provided the government with much-needed funds. Making the current rates permanent will take a bite out of the federal treasury, with the government estimated to lose $234 billion in revenue over the next 10 years.”

“Most Republicans, meanwhile, don’t want any estate tax at all, opposing the concept on philosophical grounds.”

“Death should not be a taxable event,” said Rep. Dave Camp (Mich.), the top Republican on the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee. “Death should not force the sale of family farms or the dissolution of small businesses.”
