Some On Left Finally Figuring Out They Were Bamboozled

“They will try to bamboozle you, and hoodwink you, run the okey-doke on you.”

-Candidate Barack Obama, February 2008

By “they” Obama really meant “he” and some of his supporters on the left are finally figuring that out. Politico reports that there’s a “growing chorus” on the left that’s none too pleased with Barry when it comes to his most recent 180. Specifically his DOJ’s stance on warrantless wiretapping. Full story HERE.

“The new wave of criticism was triggered by two actions in recent weeks by the Justice Department. First, earlier this month, the department presented an expansive series of arguments urging a federal court in San Francisco to throw out a lawsuit over warrantless surveillance first filed against Bush. The department’s brief not only asserted the state secrets privilege, which has long infuriated civil libertarians, but also made a sweeping assertion that Americans have no rights to challenge surveillance that violates the law unless the information is improperly released.”

The Electronic Frontier Foundation even went so far as to publish a piece titled “In Warrantless Wiretapping Case, Obama DOJ’s Arguments Are Worse Than Bush’s”

“We had hoped this would go differently.”

“The DOJ claims that the U.S. Government is completely immune from litigation for illegal spying — that the Government can never be sued for surveillance that violates federal privacy statutes.”

“This is a radical assertion that is utterly unprecedented. No one — not the White House, not the Justice Department, not any member of Congress, and not the Bush Administration — has ever interpreted the law this way.”

With this kind of buyer’s remorse coming before the completion of Obama’s first 100 days, it’s hard to imagine that he will get the support needed for a second term four years from now.

What’s surprising to many conservatives and libertarians is that any of these people believed Obama in the first place. We’ll try not to do any finger wagging though. We’re going to need their support in the future to get the United States government back on the side of the people.

Obama Defending Bush Wiretapping Program

exploding-head3President Transparency has apparently figured out that he needs the Bush wiretap program to fight terrorists. This should go over well with his base:

“The Obama administration is again invoking government secrecy in defending the Bush administration’s wiretapping program, this time against a lawsuit by AT&T customers who claim federal agents illegally intercepted their phone calls and gained access to their records.”

“Disclosure of the information sought by the customers, “which concerns how the United States seeks to detect and prevent terrorist attacks, would cause exceptionally grave harm to national security,” Justice Department lawyers said in papers filed Friday in San Francisco.”

“Kevin Bankston of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a lawyer for the customers, said Monday the filing was disappointing in light of the Obama presidential campaign’s “unceasing criticism of Bush-era secrecy and promise for more transparency.”

I almost feel bad for Mr. Bankston for believing Obama in the first place. That filibuster Obama promised long ago must seem like so much dust in the wind.

FISA Ruled Legal, Progressive Skull Implosions Anticipated

exploding-head3

A Federal Court has upheld the warrantless wiretap law or FISA as it’s known, allowing US government officials to tap phone calls in the ongoing effort to protect America from acts of terrorism.

Last year Obama sent his minions into a blind rage when he voted to support FISA after saying he would lead a filibuster to oppose it.

“Obama, sounding on Friday a lot like Bush, said: “Given the legitimate threats we face, providing effective intelligence collection tools with appropriate safeguards is too important to delay.”

I almost feel bad for them for believing him. Almost.

Obama seems to sound more like Bush every day but will the media ever treat Obama the way they treated Bush? Not likely.

Ed Morrissey at Hot Air makes the excellent point that someone may owe George W. Bush an apology.
