Some conservatives oppose gay marriage, some don't. The same could be said about the other side of the political spectrum. Obviously, not all Democrats support gay marriage. Including President Obama.
As a Libertarian, I support gay marriage. I don’t think the government has the right to tell free American citizens who they can and can’t marry. That being said, I fail to understand why America’s gay community thinks thought Obama would deliver on anything.
Even though he has said he opposes gay marriage, everyone in his camp seems to think he’s speaking in code and secretly supports it. He doesn’t.
I find it funny that as soon as The Advocate, a leading gay interest magazine, featured Obama on the cover with the word “NOPE?” emblazoned beneath his face, we see the following report from the Associated Press, right on cue.
Obama Administration Says Marriage Law Unfair
“WASHINGTON — The Obama administration filed court papers Monday claiming a federal marriage law discriminates against gays, even as government lawyers continue to defend the law.”
“Justice Department lawyers are seeking to dismiss a suit brought by a gay California couple challenging the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act. The administration’s response to the case has angered gay activists who see it as backtracking on campaign promises made by Barack Obama.”
Would a McCain Administration have been better on gay rights? We’ll never know. One thing we do know is that so far, Obama is no better for America’s gay community than George W. Bush.
Every time an organization like The Advocate makes a major criticism of Obama you’ll see some small report about Obama “fighting” for American gay people but it’s nothing more than spin to make sure liberals continue to toe the party line.
It’s table scraps, nothing more.
And for any gay people who think it’s impossible to be gay and conservative, I highly suggest you start reading a great blog called Gay Patriot.
Contrary to what you’ve been told, conservatives do not hate gay people, nor do Libertarians. We love freedom. That includes your freedom to be who you are.
