When Obama Said Closing GITMO Was His GOAL…

I doubt this is what anyone had in mind…

When he was running for president, Obama promised his leftist base that he’d close GITMO. Once he became president and learned all the top secret intelligence George W. Bush had known since 9/11, he realized that was a promise he couldn’t keep.

Even so, few Americans back then could have imagined that their tax dollars would be used to pay $750K for a new soccer field at Camp 6 in Guantanamo Bay.

Skyrocketing gas prices, consistently high unemployment and a housing market in the dump. What’s a president to do, just spend more taxpayer money? Scooooooooorrrrrrre!!!!!!!!!

At a time of record deficits, a new soccer field for detainees at Camp 6 in Guantanamo Bay is just getting the finishing touches — at a cost of $750,000 to taxpayers.

The project was the highlight of a tour Tuesday of the detention camp for reporters at the facility covering the arraignment in a military court of Majid Khan, a former Baltimore resident and the the only legal U.S. resident on trial at Guantanamo.

The project began in April 2011 and is due to finish this spring. The detainees will now have three recreation facilities at Camp 6, which is home to “highly compliant” detainees who live in a communal setting.

In addition to an indoor recreation field and the existing outdoor recreation field, the new soccer field — selected because it is such a popular sport with detainees — is half the size of an American football field.

Now… because this is clearly a laugh or cry situation, I choose to laugh. In that spirit, here’s the classic Monty Python video about famous philosophers playing soccer. Enjoy.

#Occupy GITMO

This isn’t hope but it certainly is change…

“Military given go-ahead to detain US terrorist suspects without trial”

I patiently await the Code Pink/Occupy/MoveOn campaign to attack the Fascist Barack Obama…

Barack Obama has abandoned a commitment to veto a new security law that allows the military to indefinitely detain without trial American terrorism suspects arrested on US soil who could then be shipped to Guantánamo Bay.

Human rights groups accused the president of deserting his principles and disregarding the long-established principle that the military is not used in domestic policing. The legislation has also been strongly criticised by libertarians on the right angered at the stripping of individual rights for the duration of “a war that appears to have no end”.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.

There is nothing Libertarian about Obama and today’s Democratic Party.

Osama Bin Laden is Dead, America Finally Exhales

Good riddance to human garbage.

By now, you’ve no doubt heard that Osama Bin Laden is dead. This is great news for all Americans and freedom lovers everywhere but especially for those who lost loved ones on 9/11.

Thank God for the US Military and the American Intelligence community for the outstanding job they’ve done over so many years to bring us to this moment. It gives me great satisfaction to know that the last thing Bin Laden saw on his way to hell was the face of an American Soldier.

I would congratulate President Obama but he did such a good job of congratulating himself in his address last night that there’s really nothing I can add.

I’ll say this to Obama and the liberals who wasted no time politicizing this in his favor.

On behalf of President George W. Bush…

You’re welcome.

VIDEO: Charles Krauthammer Calls Obama And Democrats Hypocrites After Their Embrace Of Bush Terrorism Policies

Change!

During the 2008 election, Obama supporters called John McCain “McSame.”

What will they call Barack Obama now?

President Obama signed an executive order Monday that will create a formal system of indefinite detention for those held at the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, who continue to pose a significant threat to national security. The administration also said it will start new military commission trials for detainees there.

The announcements, coming more than two years after Obama vowed in another executive order to close the detention center, all but cements Guantanamo Bay’s continuing role in U.S. counterterrorism policy.

Here’s the bullshit you bought progressives. Good luck returning it. Krauthammer weighs in at the 3:30 mark.

An Old Saying in New England: Light Dawns On Marblehead

Jim Geraghty once said that all Barack Obama promises come with an expiration date. All of them.

Today’s case in point…

Obama Restarts Guantanamo Trials

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama approved Monday the resumption of military trials for detainees at the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, ending a two-year ban.

It was the latest acknowledgement that the detention facility Obama had vowed to shut down within a year of taking office will remain open for some time to come. But even while announcing a resumption of military commission trials, Obama reaffirmed his support for trying terror suspects in U.S. federal courts – something that’s met vehement resistance on Capitol Hill.

Just in case you forgot, here’s a short video from Obama’s inauguration over two years ago.

There’s an old saying in New England to describe a situation where someone suddenly discovers something that’s been obvious to everyone else for a long time…

“Light dawns on Marblehead.”

Why Would Algerian Detainees Rather Stay At GITMO?

Could it be because they’re treated better by America than they would be treated by the government of their own country?

In a word? Yes.

The Obama administration would quickly send home six Algerians held at the military detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, but for one problem: The men don’t want to go. Given the choice between repatriation and incarceration, the men choose Gitmo, according to their lawyers.

The administration secured a significant legal victory Thursday when a federal appeals court overturned a lower court’s ruling that had barred the government from repatriating one of them. The detainee had asserted that if he is returned, the Algerian government will torture him or he will be targeted by terrorist groups who will kill him if he refuses to join.

Hat Tip to John Hinderaker at Powerline who adds:

The detainees fear that they might be tortured or killed if they return to Algeria. Which is to say, actually tortured, something that has never happened at Gitmo, notwithstanding the global hyperventilation of the last seven or eight years.

Wouldn’t it be nice if leftist organizations, like – oh I don’t know – the Democratic Party, would acknowledge this as a fact just once?

I guess it’s too bad that the Algerian detainees aren’t Uighurs because if they were, they’d probably be headed to the sandy pink beaches of Bermuda.

Of course, that plan worked so well that it inspired graffiti in the subways of Boston, Massachusetts.

How Does This Make America Safer?

It clearly doesn’t. So why are we doing it?

“A prison complex 150 miles from Chicago will house Gitmo detainees, the Obama administration will announce Tuesday.”

“A senior administration official tells ABC News that on Tuesday the administration will announce that President Obama “has directed  that the federal government proceed with the acquisition of the Thomson Correctional Center in Thomson, Illinois to house federal inmates and a limited number of detainees from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.”

“Thomson Correctional Center is a  maximum security prison that opened in 2001 but has never been fully utilized because of state budget issues.”

“Information from the state of Illinois indicates that Thomson Correctional Center is a Level 1 adult male maximum-security facility comprised of 1,600 cells and eight housing units, none of which are currently used. The facility is on 146 acres and is currently surrounded by a 12-foot exterior fence and 15-foot interior fence — which includes a dual sided electric stun fence.”

“Closing the detention center at Guantanamo is essential to protecting our national security and helping our troops by removing a deadly recruiting tool from the hands of al Qaeda,” the official said. “Tomorrow’s announcement is an important step forward as we work to achieve our national security objectives.”

Yeah, right.

The answer to my question above is simple. We’re doing it because Obama is beholden to his base to close Gitmo. Obama and his base are putting their political agenda ahead of national security.

Let me say that again. Obama’s success is more important to them than America’s national security.

John McCormack at the Weekly Standard just published a memo being circulated by Republicans on Capitol Hill regarding the decision. It’s well worth a read…

“Having failed to bring the Olympics to Illinois, President Obama will give Illinois an odd replacement gift just in time for the Holidays—al Qaeda terrorists from the Guantanamo detention facility. In announcing this decision, there still remains no explication of how closing Guantanamo makes America safer. Quite to the contrary, unnecessarily importing al Qaeda terrorists into the United States 1) gives them more legal protections, including Constitutional rights, than they have now at Guantanamo, 2) increases the chances they may be released into the country, and 3) in exchange for these significant costs, does not appease the Democratic base, and certainly will not appease al Qaeda.”

Read the whole thing.

UPDATE: Silly me! I didn’t know bringing Gitmo to Illinois was a jobs program!
