The Obama Administration on So-Called Torture… All Sham, No Wow

February 2, 2009

fakeIt has come to light recently that President Obama, for all his posturing on Gitmo and detainees, has expanded the practice of renditions.

This means that terrorist detainees won’t be sent to Gitmo but can instead be turned over to foreign countries in prisons all over the world.

An anonymous source from the CIA told the Los Angeles Times:

“In some ways, [rendition] is the worst option,” the former official said. “If they are in U.S. hands, you have a lot of checks and balances, medics and lawyers. Once you turn them over to another service, you lose control.”

This presents an obvious conundrum for Obama supporters who have been on a moral high horse. Detainees could actually be treated much worse under Obama than they were under Bush, a point that wasn’t lost on Moe Lane from RedState:

“The only thing left is to hand these sons of bitches over to countries without our Bill of Rights and hope that this is enough.

  • Mark Kleiman. Obama supporter? Then you are now officially pro-torture.
  • Andrew Sullivan. Obama supporter? Then you are now officially pro-torture.
  • Hillary* Bok. Obama supporter? Then you are now officially pro-torture.
  • Glenn Greenwald. Obama supporter? Then you are now officially pro-torture.
  • Kevin Drum. Obama supporter? Then you are now officially pro-torture.
  • Duncan Black. Obama supporter? Then you are now officially pro-torture.
  • Markos Moulitsas. Obama supporter? Then you are now officially pro-torture.
  • Jerome Armstrong. Obama supporter? Then you are now officially pro-torture.
  • Matt Stoller. Obama supporter? Then you are now officially pro-torture.
  • All the damned rest of you on the Online Left. Every single one of you who supported Obama. You are now officially pro-torture.”

Ed Morrissey at Hot Air points out the catch 22 of the situation:

“The one place the US has for that purpose will close, thanks to the entirely hysterical political press to close Gitmo. The CIA by law cannot bring the suspects back to the US. That leaves release, rendition, or assassination as the only three options left to Obama after all of the political posturing of the campaign.”

So where does that leave the USA? Screwed basically. We’re certainly no safer with no ability to detain suspects and obtain information. This is just more tactical PR from a president who promised everything thereby guaranteeing his inability to deliver anything.

All sham.

No wow.

Ha! Isn’t this sooo funny? I mean who would have thunk it? Isn’t reality a mofo?

Welcome to the pro-torture club Obamaniacs. There is plenty of room!

Great post by the way. I’m glad you covered it. I did the same. In fact, it was a pleasure.

This site puts out great stuff.
