Former Staffer For California Republican Admits to Lies That Ruined Campaign
Dear Republicans: choose your staffers well.
Carl DeMaio is a California Republican who had a chance to win a house seat in 2014. Even though the race was happening in blue California, it was one of the state’s more conservative districts.
All hopes were dashed when one of DeMaio’s former staffers named Todd Bosnich accused him of sexual harassment in the final weeks of the campaign. He even produced threatening emails which he claimed were sent to him by someone in the DeMaio camp.
Democrats welcomed the scandal and although DeMaio strongly denied the charges, he was defeated by Democrat Scott Peters.
Now the LA Times is reporting that the staffer Todd Bosnich made the whole thing up and has even admitted his lies to the FBI, which was part of the investigation…
Ex-campaign worker admits lying about San Diego congressional candidate
On Friday, the ex-staffer admitted in federal court that he lied when he claimed to have gotten an anonymous email threatening that he would never work again in politics if he revealed things about DeMaio.
Todd Bosnich, 29, pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice by lying to the FBI about the email. Until Friday, it was not known publicly that the federal government was investigating the email.
During the campaign, Bosnich had told reporters that he was ”positive” that the email, and others, came from DeMaio or someone close to him.
But in his guilty plea, Bosnich admitted that he sent the email to himself through a dummy account and then took the email to the Peters campaign who turned it over to the San Diego Police Department.
Bosnich’s actions “had the potential to affect a national election,” said Assistant U.S. Atty. Phil Halpern. “Mr. Bosnich, for whatever reason, had a great deal of hostility and personal animus toward Mr. DeMaio.”
The email, now known to be fraudulent, was meant to support Bosnich’s allegation that DeMaio had touched him inappropriately and masturbated in front of him.
Liberals are always willing to believe the worst about Republicans, especially when it serves their cause. When the allegations against DeMaio were made public, Talking Points Memo happily covered the story…
Accuser: GOP Candidate Masturbated ‘Penis In His Hand’ In Front Of Me
Republican Congressional Candidate Carl DeMaio, running in California’s 52nd Congressional District, allegedly once asked a campaign staffer to come into his office and when the staffer did DeMaio, whose back was turned, turned around and masturbated in front of the staffer.
That’s according to Todd Bosnich, a former staffer for the DeMaio campaign, who detailed the allegations of alleged sexual harassment against the Republican candidate, which included making inappropriate advances, massaging and kissing his neck, and groping, in an interview with CNN that aired Friday afternoon.
“I saw his hand —— his penis in his hand,” Bosnich said when describing the incident. “He had a smile on his face. And as soon as I came over, he was looking at me.”
“So there was no mistaking what was happening?” CNN’s Chris Frates asked.
“There was no mistaking whatsoever,” Bosnich said.
DeMaio and the candidate’s campaign has strongly denied Bosnich’s accusations.
Bosnich said the harassment started after an evening with campaign staff at a local bar when DeMaio offered to drive him home. Bosnich said they were making small talk when DeMaio “reached over into my lap and grabbed my crotch.” Bosnich said he pushed DeMaio away.
“I just was shocked because I’d never had anyone do something like that to me, especially in a position of authority and trust,” Bosnich said. “And at the time, I just figured, maybe he was drunk and blew it off. But he progressively and progressively, inappropriate touching incidents continues from there.”
Bosnich also accused DeMaio of trying to trying to stop Bosnich from going forward about the alleged harassment. DeMaio’s campaign manager, according to Bosnich, brushed off Bosnich when he recounted the alleged harassment.
“The campaign manager laughed it off, that’s just the way Carl is, and that if I really felt that uncomfortable, I shouldn’t have let him know that I’m a gay man,” Bosnich told CNN.
Luckily, even though Peters won, Republicans still control the House.
Moe Lane has suggested a fix for this awful story at Red State which I heartily endorse…
I would suggest, however, that this entire tawdry story be an issue in the 2016 election. I would further suggest that in the meantime House leadership makes sure that any legislation that has Scott Peters’ public support should die a long, lingering, and rather excruciating death. Just to be on the safe side, and all that.
No one knows if Todd Bosnich was a plant or just a bad person but his lawyer claims he’s now getting the help he needs…
Bosnich “made a serious and foolish mistake,” Frank Vecchione, Bosnich’s attorney, said in court Friday. Vecchione said Bosnich is now in counseling for his problems.
How nice for him.
