Lots of Conservatives Like the Grateful Dead

July 5, 2015

I used to think it was just me and Ann Coulter but apparently, the music of the Grateful Dead has wide appeal to many conservatives.

Hunter Schwarz of the Washington Post…

Grateful Dead fans: Surprisingly Republican

The Grateful Dead are playing the final show of their “Fare Thee Well” Tour on Sunday in Chicago, and if that means anything to you, you’re more likely a Republican than a Democrat.

What? America’s pioneering jam band is more a Republican thing than a Democratic one? Well, kinda.

A poll conducted by Public Opinion Strategies and the Mellman Group found the band has a 46 percent hard name ID (i.e. whether people can judge it favorably or unfavorably) among Republicans, compared with 37 percent among Democrats, and 35 percent among independents.

It makes perfect sense if you think about it. Their video for U.S. Blues is about an inch away from being a Schoolhouse Rock video describing the Boston Tea Party.

Here’s a bonus tune by the Jerry Garcia Band called The Wheel. I love this song…

Golly gee, if politics was a barrier for a musical entry onto my MP3 player, there would be no CSN, Jackson Browne, James Taylor, Ten Years After, Rita Coolidge, Neil Young, Jimmy Buffett, Clapton, and most of the others. Sorry, but Ted Nugent’s music never appealed to me. Politics and music should be kept separate like religion, politics and the dinner table. Honey, pass the green beans and then turn up the stereo, I like this next Zac Brown song.

I didn’t go to the “Fare Thee Well” shows, but I am going to the Peach Festival in a few days, where there will be a lot of Deadheads as Bob Weir is playing as well as many similar groups. Jam band music festivals are pretty much a glorification of Capitalism and many don’t even realize it.
